Perfumes and asthma

Can perfumes trigger asthmatic attacks?

You bet, they can. Perfumes are made up of a lot of synthetic chemicals and each of the chemicals is a potent allergen. For allergy sufferers, perfumes can make life miserable. The stronger the sent, the more severe is that asthmatic or allergic attack.

The reason why perfumes cause asthma is because the chemicals get inhaled and irritate the airways. The lining of the nose and lungs immediately reacts to these chemicals and narrows the airways. In most cases, the asthmatic attack is mild but can be life threatening in some individuals.

Perfumes are not the only cosmetics that can trigger asthmatic attacks. There are hundreds of other creams, lotions and sprays.
